I've
known John since the second grade (forty years at this writing). We went to
the same middle school and high school. We both went to the University of Virginia,
though I was undergraduate and he went a few years later to UVa law school,
after Princeton (the UVa of the North). After college, we lived together on
Pine Street. We've had a lot of fun together and I can't remember ever having
a bad time with John, even broken down along Interstate 25, in the broiling
sun, surrounded by goatheads, my dream weekend turning into a nightmare.

No one ever could. Meg and John have been married at least a decade; I was the better man, excuse me, best man. They are one of two cosmopolitan couples I know (my brother Dan & his wife Sharon are the other). They live in England and frequent Europe (and the states, for that matter). They live an enviable life together.
