Dreamweaver Problem at UNM

March 08, 2004

Q: I am having trouble using Dreamweaver to upload to my UNM website.

A: UNM has a special requirement for a so-called 'secure login'. Dreamweaver MX under Windows does not default to this. In the Define Sites process, under Remote Info, there is a checkbox for ''Use SSH encrypted secure login''. If you're using the 2004 version of DWMX, that may be all you need to do. For the version prior to 2004, DW will tell you to download and install a program (Macromedia - Dreamweaver: PuTTY and SSH Integration). After you install PuTTY, see CIRT: Encryption: Dreamweaver & the FTP to SFTP bridge. You can do that, though I'd recommend upgrading to 2004 as soon as you can or trying a different approach.

The other approach is to download a program called ''SSH'' from the CIRT website. Follow this link, CIRT: Security: SFTP Information, then the link to download. Download the file, open it. When it is done, look under Start, Programs, SSH Secure Shell, Secure File Transfer Agent. If you do this (not as hard as it may seem at first), you run this program and use it to upload to UNM. That means you can't use DW's site manager for uploading. Best to upgrade DW.

I teach a class called Your UNM Departmental Web Site (6825BA). It's a one day class (4 hours). We deal with downloading and installing SSH. If there are enough Dreamweaver users in the class, I also work with the DW SSH option. mjh
