Letter:CIRT representative says system wasn't cracked
[T]wo UNM accounts were compromised. CIRT recognized the incident as an unauthorized access to the Linux computing service, and locked the affected accounts. UNM's Linux system was not "cracked," as the headline would indicate. There was unauthorized access of one encrypted system file. This is the extent of the incident.
As a result of this incident, CIRT wants to urge everyone at UNM to change their account passwords now and regularly in the future, as a preventive measure. The security of UNM's computing systems is directly related to the creation and frequent changing of good, effective passwords.
Go to www.unm.edu/cirt/password for information on creating good, effective passwords and to change your password. To subscribe to sysinfo-l, go to www.unm.edu/cirt/sysinfo.
