November 10, 2004
On January 4, 2005, all e-mail sent using CIRT e-mail servers will require SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) authentication. This will require a small modification by everyone using desktop e-mail applications (Webmail will not require any modification).
SMTP authentication will further help eliminate spam sent through compromised computers at UNM. These compromised computers can be used as spambots to send spam out via CIRT servers. That can result in mail sent out from CIRT servers being blocked by large ISPs such as Comcast, AOL, etc.
If you do not make the required change to your e-mail application, you will be unable to send mail from UNM. Instructions for making this change are available for many of the e-mail applications used at UNM. more
