Currently $279.99 with free shipping from Amazon.

I am not 100% satisfied with my ViewSonic gTablet. However, it is a decent tool for browsing the Web: good size and screen resolution.

Gmote turns your Android device into a remote control for a media server that runs separately on another computer (presumably your desktop). The client and server are Open Source and free.

Because the server software isn’t the same as your main media player (Windows Media Player, in my case, but servers exist for Mac and Unix), you don’t have the same options or playlists. So far, I haven’t found a way to play all, just all in selected folder.

There are two bearable glitches: The Server crashes now and then and has to be restarted on the server machine (you need physical access to do this). The Remote screen hasn’t be adapted to the gTablet’s larger screen and runs in portrait, looking a little goofy, but functional.

Gmote > Android Remote

Gmote turns Android into a remote control for a computer, allowing users to run movies and music at a distance. It supports all of the standard remote control features such as play, pause, rewind, volume controls etc. It also has a built-in file browser that lets you select what to play.

If the link for the Client (.apk) on the main Gmote page doesn’t work for you, try the link below. I think the Gmote client is also in one or more Android markets.

Gmote 2.0.4 seem to be the latest available version. Below you can find file(s) assigned to this version:

  • Gmote_2.0.4.apk (236 KB, ↓ 2208)  [this download is for your Android client, not for your desktop server]

I had a heck of a time installing Firefox 4 on my new Viewsonic gTablet. I couldn’t find the option in Amazon’s otherwise great App Market. The gMarket site (Handango) didn’t work. Going directly to Google’s own Android Market failed repeatedly because this isn’t a phone. Naturally, I tried installing from Firefox. Success came in the form of the ftp link in the last paragraph before – a long link to type onscreen.

After installation, I set-up Sync. Note that you should use a device that has FF 4 installed and synced to complete the setup. Although Sync works fine in 3.x, the Add a Device function did not work for me in 3.x, but did work in 4.

Firefox 4 for Android is now available. This beta is available for ARMv7 only, and requires Android 2.0 or higher. Please check the system requirements below to see if your device is compatible.

You can install Firefox through the Android Market web site, or go to http://firefox.com/m on your phone.

If you have a compatible device without Android Market access, you can also download Firefox for Android directly from our FTP server.
